Boutique serves as alternative to mall brand fashions of the Galleria

Let's face it, although we may like to pretend differently, Poughkeepsie certainly isn't the fashion capital of the world. Nothing is more of a testament to that fact than the poor representation of retail stores found in the Galleria Mall. So where are the fashion savvy supposed to get their shopping fix? Enter Elizabeth Boutique, a newly opened small shop located about five minutes from Marist College catering to the classically stylish woman. Beth Madsen, the owner of Elizabeth Boutique, depicts her store as fun and casual- a place with something for everyone. Looking around the charming boutique her description of offering classic clothes accented by trendy accessories is dead on. Immediately I get the urge to reach for my credit card, but I regretfully refrain.

Premium denim is one of the top sellers here. Beth carries popular brands such as Hudson and Citizens, two favorites among Marist fashionistas. Scarves are another hit item, with a large assortment of colors and styles to choose from. But it's not all about the product for Beth.

She loves throwing events for her customers, often times to benefit charities. She even threw a party exclusively for Marist girls back in March featuring shopping, massages, and the organic makeup brand Kiss My Face. As a fashion merchandising major herself, this boutique is a dream come true for Beth. A graduate from Johnson & Wales University, her degree also makes her an easy person for Marist fashion majors to relate to. As I walk out of Elizabeth Boutique I am quickly reminded that I am still in Poughkeepsie, and not some trendy part of Manhattan. But now I know that when I'm craving a bit of urban panache, I can find it five minutes away. and without Metro North.
