Recently Marist has made the well overdue decision to make a coaching replacement. This is excellent news and we can rejoice that the Red Foxes may actually reach their potential to become a mid-major power.

Bobby Hurley has expressed interest in the vacancy. Hurley played for Duke under coaching legend Mike Krzyzewski where he won two national championships and was highly competitive. He has learned from possibly the best coach ever and is now willing to bring his talent and expertise to Poughkeepsie. He has the skill and expertise to take over this floundering program with new and innovative coaching techniques.

His father is one of the premier area high school coaches (St. Anthonys). Hurley Sr. enjoys an impeccable record for placing quality athletes into college programs. This would be a great opportunity to recruit great quality from the New York area. Hurley is the perfect age (32) to relate to young athletes and develop them properly.

Bottom line, his experience and background are perfect for what we should be looking for. Children of great coaches often make great coaches.

Marist has turned into a highly competitive institution in which myself and my many alumni friends are very proud. It has high academic standards and is an example of quality education. We can have a winning tradition in basketball without sacrificing our high standards. There is no reason our hoop program cannot be on the level of a Gonzaga, Xavier or St. Josephs. We certainly are academically.

We have been following the Marist program for 18 years and with few exceptions have seen nothing but a group of directionless non athletes. I have watched closely, traveled to the MAAC tourney several times as well as annual games at Fairfield, Manhattan, Iona and St. Peters. To be completely honest, I haven't seen anything really exciting since I lived in Leo Hall. That was 1986. Many of you were probably not born. Trust me, it was a lot of fun.

President Murray and Athletic Director Tim Murray need to do the right thing. Hire Bobby Hurley.
