Last Thursday, the Student Government Association (SGA) gave one final opportunity to potential officers for the class of 2008.
The Performing Arts Room (PAR) held "Meet the Candidates" to those students running for resident senator, commuter senator, class of 2008 president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, class of 2007 secretary and treasurer, and class of 2005 Vice President and Treasurer.
Student body president Linda Crane compared this year's elections to prior elections and believes there is a distinct difference.
"I don't think the participation level in past elections has been up to par compared to what it could be, but I think this year there are so many people running that it definitely raised the bar," she said. "I feel that all of the candidates have the leadership abilities that are needed, and no matter what the outcome of the election, the freshmen class will be heading in the right direction."
During the event, students were given a chance to meet the officers discussing matters that concerned them while enjoying free food and drinks.
Current Student Government officials also appeared to get a better idea as to why the officers were running for these positions and find out their real opinions on bringing all areas of the Marist campus together.
Crane spoke with many of the officers during the event and is confident in their abilities to successfully work with the Student Government Association.
"I believe, without a doubt, that the new freshmen class officers along with all of the other officers elected this time around will aid in making this year a successful year for the Student Government Association," she said.
Omar Diaz, class of 2008 presidential candidate, said he wants to apply himself to the Student Government Association and do everything in his power to make the freshman class enjoy their first year on campus.
"No matter what comes out of these elections, I plan on still being a part of the Student Government Association," he said. "I am very much interested in helping out with Student Life and I just want to hear the concerns of students so that I can help them the best way I can."
