Last week they were big fishes in a small pond; however, this past Saturday was a different story for Coach Phil Kelly and the Marist women's cross country team.
They went from dominating a small, weak field at the Bronx Invitational one week, to placing 22nd in a field of 40 teams in the Paul Short Cross Country Run at Lehigh University the next. However as bad as that sounds, the results from the Paul Short Run were mostly positive and brought hope for the future.
"I hoped to beat a few teams and we didn't have our top runner [Diane Matthews], so it went well," said Coach Kelly, "In fact some kids ran better as opposed to last week considering the course was longer and much tougher."
Once again Kelly found his freshmen reliable as the two top runners for the Red Foxes were freshmen. Finishing first for the Red Foxes was Sarah Domermuth, who finished 100th overall with a time of 22:59. Caitlin Garrity continued her string of Marist second place finishes with a time of 23:24, which placed her 124th overall.
"This was by far the best race of the year for Sarah," said Kelly. "Caitlin has been really solid finishing second on the team in everything."
Finishing one second after Garrity was sophomore Alli Kline, who is beginning to re-establish herself after getting off to a slow start this year. Freshman Heidi Richards and junior Denise Tumulty rounded out the top five for Marist, with times of 24:07 and 24:38 respectively.
Kelly also mentioned one team member's comeback in this meet.
"The biggest light of hope during the match was Rachel Watson [sophomore], he said. "She had been sick and disappeared in the beginning, but yesterday she finished with the sixth fastest time [24:21], and I think she's back."
With all the positives that came out of the Paul Short Run, Kelly and the Red Foxes are looking ahead to the Metropolitan Championship, Saturday, in Van Cortland Park.
"We will be facing some good teams in Stony Brook, Rutgers, and Columbia," said Kelly. "I will be looking for a fourth place finish."
