For four straight games, it has been an uphill battle for the Marist men's soccer team to score a goal.
On Sunday, Sept. 10, Marist took part in the 2006 Mayor's Cup Tournament at SUNY Oneonta. However, they were knocked out in the first round by Penn, by a 4-0 margin, making it Marist's fourth straight loss without a goal.
UPENN displayed a dominant first half. The Quakers scored three times, led by Derek Hobson's two goals. Omid Shokoufandeh scored the first goal for the Quakers, a shot from the outside of the box at the 10:58 mark.
Hobson scored his first goal on a penalty kick only 14 minutes into the game, and added a second goal 10 minutes later on an assist by Mike Klein, who also assisted Shokoufandeh.
All the Quakers needed was one goal to decide the fate of the game.
The Penn defense shut down Marist the entire game, and the Quaker offense added another goal from Ryan Tracy with only six minutes left in the game.
One strong point of the game for Marist came from goalkeeper Marcelo del Rio. The sophomore from Glendale, N..Y, started for the first time this season and had four saves.
In four straight games, the Marist offense has failed to score a goal.
After the 2-1 win over Army on Aug. 28, an offensive struggle has slowed the Red Foxes. Losses against Yale, St. John's, Towson, and the University of Pennsylvania have put Marist's scoring drive on the hot seat.
Red Fox men's soccer will have to wait and see if the home crowd can boost its performance.
The next opportunity to see the Red Foxes in action will be on the home opener this Friday, Sept. 15 as Marist hosts the Hofstra Pride at Leonidoff Field, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
