The quest to defend the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championship began for both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams on Saturday in the Red/White Challenge.

This competitive inter-squad match was the first match of the season for the Red Foxes. The Men's Red Team defeated the White Team by a score of 44-42, while the Women's Red Team won by a score of 58-28.

Director of Swimming, Larry Van Wagner, was pleased by his team's performances this weekend.

"We had a very good performance in the Red/White Challenge," Van Wagner said. "This is a unique match because it is inter-squad and it is raced at high school distances, which is half of the college distance."

Both sophomore Spencer Hartmann and freshman Jenny Serino caught Van Wagner's attention during the match.

"In the men's 200 yard freestyle, Hartmann swam a 1:44.89 which was .08 seconds away from his personal best. At this time during the season, most swimmers are four to five seconds away from their personal best times," Van Wagner said. "Jenny was a very pleasant surprise. She had two very good races in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle."

Last Year:

Last year both the men's and women's teams won the MAAC title.

The men's team finished with a 9-1 record in dual meets, and won its tenth title in eleven years. The lone loss in its last 60 MAAC dual matches came at the hands of the Rider Broncs.

In addition, the men's team finished in third place in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Swimming and Diving Championships held in Pittsburgh.

The women's team, after winning the MAAC title, went on to finish in first place at the ECAC Swimming and Diving Championship. During the three-day competition, the Red Foxes broke 10 conference records and established 11 new school records.

On the individual level, senior diver Meghan Duffy became the school's first top-eight finalist at the NCAA Regional Diving Championships.
