The women's soccer team's second half struggles continued as they were downed 2-0 by the Canisius Golden Griffins on Sunday.
The Red Foxes out-shot Canisius 7-3 in a first half that saw Marist hit the cross bar 7 times but relinquished 2 second half goals in the loss.
Both teams entered the second half knotted in a scoreless tie, but the Golden Griffins broke the draw in the 49th minute when senior Heidi Wein finished off a rebound to give Canisius the lead.
Canisius sealed the victory in the 81st minute when sophomore Carly McGunnuigle beat Marist goalkeeper Anna Case with the Red Foxes pressing to tie the game.
The 2-0 loss was not the only tough break Marist suffered in the loss however. Red Foxes freshman forward Kate Fox broke her right leg midway through the second half when she collided with Canisius goalkeeper Jenna Gage.
Marist Red Foxes coach Elizabeth Roper said losing Fox was even harder because of how well she had been playing.
"Kate had been playing really well and had a great weekend," Roper said. "She scored 2 goals Friday night and losing her was really tough."
The loss of Fox capped a frustrating game for Marist in which they had missed opportunities and inconsistent play.
"I think our games against Canisius and Fairfield were the only games where we have not been ourselves," Roper said. "We were hesitant and indecisive, which was unfortunate since we were playing a very underrated Canisius team."
Coach Roper said the Red Foxes inability to consistently control the game allowed Canisius to capitalize and eventually win the game.
"We weren't connecting our passes and couldn't get any kind of consistency going," Roper said. "We weren't able to get in any kind of flow."
By the end of the game, the Red Foxes were out-shot 14-12 while holding an advantage on corner kicks, 4-2. Marist goalkeepers Caitlin Nazarechuk and Anna Case combined for 4 saves while splitting time in the match.
With the loss, Marist drops to 4-11-1 with a MAAC record of 2-5-1. They will finish their season on Friday night at Leonidoff Field with a game against Siena for Senior Day.
Coach Roper knows the team will be ready to play so they can give the Marist seniors the proper send-off.
"Friday night will be a very emotional game against Siena, and we are looking forward to it," Roper said. "It will be a fun environment where we look to end the season on a positive note and win one for the seniors who have left their mark on this program. Our seniors have maintained commitment and leadership through a tough transition period when they came here as freshman."
The Red Foxes also look to end with a win so they can carry some momentum over into next season.
