Last year, just one point separated Marist from Iona in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) tournament semi-final game and allowed Marist to move on into the finals.
On Tues. Oct. 24, just two votes separated Iona from Marist on MAAC Media Day, as Marist's three coaches' votes was second to Iona's five.
According to Marist head coach Brian Giorgis, it comes as no surprise that an Iona team that returns a trio of All-MAAC selections following its most successful season in more than 20 years would be voted the conference's team to beat.
With that in mind, Giorgis said it was nice to receive the number of votes it did, despite losing last year's MAAC player of the year, Fifi Camara, and three year starter Kristin Vilardi ('06).
"We had a feeling that Iona would be picked pre-season number one," Giorgis said. "It was nice to see that we got some votes, and they still think of us as a strong team despite losing Fifi and Kristin Vilardi. We were pleased with that."
In the five years head coach Brian Giorgis has been at Marist, not once have the Red Foxes been ranked number one in the pre-season poll at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Media Day.
Yet, Marist has managed to win the regular season title twice and capture the MAAC tournament championship twice in that five year span.
Giorgis pointed out that the parity within the MAAC conference is such, that it is almost impossible to pick the conference winner, especially before the season begins.
"In this conference it's so well-balanced," he said. "If you're not ready to play, or you get some key injuries, it could be long seasons for you. We [the MAAC coaches who do the voting] haven't gotten it right in the five years that I've been here as far as picking the right team anyway. [The team and I] just hope it happens one more time."
The pre-season second place Red Foxes look to win their third title in four years coming off a record-setting 2005-2006 campaign.
