Genovese and Rolon claim Flight A doubles championship at Cornell

After several weeks of disappointing play, Red Fox tennis seniors Pedro Genovese and Federico Rolon proved last weekend why they are Marist's top doubles team.
The pair claimed the Flight A Doubles championship at the Cornell Fall Indoor Invitational in Ithaca, defeating the University of Buffalo's Nikesh Singh Panthlia and Yules Hatisubroto 8-3.
Genovese and Rolon started their weekend by defeated Binghamton's Justin Salkin and Pierre Clavel 8-5 on Friday, and then took down teams from Navy and Cornell, 8-5 and 8-2 respectively.
Coach Tim Smith was away from the team to attend the birth of his grandchild, but was pleased with the results, nonetheless.
"I was happy that they won the tournament," Smith said. "And last year Pedro and [former player] Leo Rodriguez won, so I hope we are starting a tradition."
Marist's Frank Algier also played himself into a championship match, dominating in four consecutive contests during the first two days of the tournament.
Algier handily defeated opponents from Farleigh Dickinson and Temple on Friday, and Cornell and Colgate on Saturday, before dropping the Flight C finals 7-5, 7-6 (2) to Cornell's Bryant Yung on Sunday.
"Frankie doing that well in the C division was very refreshing," Smith said, adding that Algier had been in Europe for several days last week.
Rolon and fellow senior Ray Josephs both won their first round Flight A singles matches Friday, winning 6-4, 6-3, and 6-1, 6-4 respectively. Both were felled by the racquets of hosting Cornell on Saturday however.
Although Josephs didn't enjoy the same success as his teammates, he was however happy with his teammates' play.
"Overall, we had some good results," he said. "There were nine teams there, some very strong teams like Navy and obviously Cornell."
He also reflected positively on the season, which winds up next weekend.
"It's been a good season, we seem to always have people in the finals and semifinals," Josephs said.
The team travels to New Hampshire for the Dartmouth Invitational next weekend in what will be the final contest of the fall season for the Foxes.
