Issue date: 2/1/07 Section: Sports
On June 28, in the world's most famous arena, Madison Square Garden, basketball fans from Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and Hartford, Conn. will be waiting for one name to be called.

With the 58th pick in the 2007 NBA Draft the San Antonio Spurs select Jared Jordan, point guard from Marist College.

Could this be true?

Well according to nbadraft.net it is.

How could a player of Jordan's caliber not be considered by NBA teams during the draft. On the season, Jordan has averaged 18.8 points, 6.2 boards and 8.9 assists. Jordan is the team leader in points and assists. He is currently tied for the team lead in rebounds with senior center James Smith.

Already on the season he has been named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) player of the week four times this season and captured both the Old Spice Classic MVP as well as the Pepsi Marist Classic MVP.

According to Sports Illustarted.com writer Seth Davis, Jordan is "the best under the radar basketball player in America…" (Cnnsi.com 1/18).

But how did this under the radar player grab the attention of NBA scouts and executives?

It was not until the first ever Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Florida when the Red Foxes were televised nationally for three days.

This was the first time that the nation got a chance to see the 6'2" point guard from Hartford, Conn.

During the three-game tournament the Red Foxes finished third and Jordan was named tournament MVP. He averaged 20.7 points, nine assists, and 6.3 rebounds.

An anonymous NBA executive said that Jordan's performance opened eyes scouts and teams across the country.

"Being on national TV this past month has helped him out a great deal," the NBA executive said. "He has created a buzz by the numbers that he put up in Orlando."

Former Marist head coach Dave Magarity who recruited Jordan to the Hudson Valley echoed the comments of the NBA executive.

"I have spoken to a few NBA scouts about Jared," Magarity said. "The interest is genuine and real. His performance in the Old Spice Classic on ESPN really put him front and center."
