After a dominant performance in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference [MAAC] tournament, the Marist Red Foxes women's tennis team has earned the right to play the University of North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

At a 2:45 p.m. ESPNEWS selection show on May 1, Marist learned that it will face the eleventh-seeded Tar Heels on May 11 in the first round of the regional bracket.

The Red Foxes compiled a 13-1 record this season, which included a 12-game win streak that began on Feb. 11 with a 7-0 win against St. Peter's. The season culminated with a 4-0 rout of second-seeded Niagara in the MAAC final. This was the Red Foxes' first MAAC tennis championship and first NCAA tournament appearance.

Head coach Roge Nesbitt was elated with her team's effort this season and was proud of the team for winning 12 straight matches.

"I am very proud and excited," Nesbitt said. "They worked hard all season, and it paid off."

This season marks the third straight year that the Red Foxes have not lost a match in the conference.

Coach Nesbitt said the Red Foxes are ready for the challenge they will face against North Carolina in the first round of the tournament and that they will give 110 percent.

"We're going to do the best we can and we are excited to have the opportunity to go," Nesbitt said. "Whatever the outcome is, we'll be happy with it."

The Red Foxes qualified for the NCAA tournament by winning three matches in the MAAC tournament. After sailing past St. Peter's and Loyola with 7-0 victories, Marist faced the Niagara Purple Eagles in the MAAC final on Apr. 22. Marist beat the Purple Eagles 4-0 after winning the first, third, and fifth singles matches and then following that up with victories in first and second doubles. Christine Ong was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

Coach Nesbitt was impressed all year by Ong's performance and said she has earned all of her accomplishments this season.

"She was excellent [in the MAAC tournament] and played very well," Nesbitt said. "She worked very hard and it was a great year for her."

The Red Foxes will now face the North Carolina Tar Heels who finished the season at 21-8 and lost the Atlantic Coast Conference [ACC] championship to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Apr. 21. The winner of the match will play the winner of the match-up between Duke and Louisiana State University.
