Guitar Hero tournaments won't be the only musical battles happening on campus this weekend.

WMAR and MCTV have joined to coordinate a battle of the bands to be held this Saturday in the Nelly Goletti theatre at 7 p.m.

Sophomores Andrew Cleary, Secretary of WMAR, and Pat Ahern, WMAR DJ, were the primary coordinators of the event. Ahern said they began discussing the show in November when they both learned that previous attempts at this event had failed.

"I didn't even know that there was a battle of the bands last year," said Ahern. "I think that was part of the problem-nobody knew it was happening."

Freshmen Katie Warren and Kate McGann became heavily involved in planning the event and designed the fliers being used to promote the show.

"It is going to be a great way to expose the Marist community to a couple of great upcoming bands," said Warren.

In order to apply, bands had fill out a written application and send in a demo of at least three original songs.

A listening party was held in late January to determine which of the 16 submissions would make it to the main stage for the battle. Only three of the bands that applied were Marist bands. Of those three, only one will play in the competition.

"We expanded the search for good music to the entire region in order to have a higher quality of bands to choose from," said Warren.

Cleary also said that part of the reason for not limiting the battle to Marist bands was due to the poor turnout of last year's battle of the bands effort.

"We hope that the higher quality of music being featured this year will attract a higher number of people," said Cleary.

Of the 16 submissions, five were chosen to compete.

"I believe we have really hit it with these five," said Warren.

Some Call Me the Poet is the only Marist band in the battle. On their MySpace page they describe themselves as "Pop/Rock/Powerpop," and say they have a sound similar to bands like Jimmy Eat World, The Starting Line and Brand New.
