Marist men earn first victory of the basketball season

The Marist men's basketball team earned their first victory over the season Saturday night, defeating Columbia, 67-62, on the road in Manhattan. Chavaughn Lewis led the Red Foxes with 19 points, and Devin Price chipped in 16 points, four on three-pointers.

After dropping their first two games to Stony Brook and Colgate, respectively, Marist went back to the basics in practice to prepare for Columbia: defensive intensity, being patient offensively, and maintaining communication on the court.

Clearly, the victory over the Lions showed that the practice translated extremely well on the game floor.

The game started with both teams exchanging points, until Columbia went on an 8-2 run en route to a 27-19 lead with 3:39 remaining in the first half. However, Marist went on their own 8-0 run, and at halftime, the Red Foxes trailed the Lions only by two points, 29-27.

Columbia started the second half by adding their lead, 31-27, but that would be the largest lead the hosts would maintain for the rest of the game, as a Lewis layup and an Adam Kemp (six points, eight rebounds) alley-oop dunk would tie the game at 31.

There would be seven times for the rest of the game in which both teams would be tied on the scoreboard. Finally, with the score tied at 55 and 4:14 to play, Lewis scored four consecutive points to give Marist the lead for good.

Columbia would not go away quietly, bringing the game to within three points with ten seconds to go. But Marist would hit its late free-throws to cement the victory.

Marist (1-2) will play their next game in Florida, where they will participate in the 2012 Old Spice Classic. The Red Foxes will square off against West Virginia on Thanksgiving Day. The game will be aired on ESPN2 at noon.
