The Office of Safety and Security has responded to several instances of criminal mischief and a unique report of a bear allegedly on campus while also working to create fire safety material for students.

On February 18, a vehicle was egged in the St. Ann’s lot.

There was a hit-and-run incident in Midrise on February 19 in which two vehicles backed into each other. A delivery driver, seeing no damage to their vehicle, left the scene despite damage to the other vehicle involved.

Another hit-and-run incident occurred in the Hoop Lot on March 1. A witness was able to report the license plate, which resulted in the perpetrator being sent to Conduct.

Once again, there was another incident of criminal mischief in Marian on February 22 involving damage to the bathroom. This was followed by two situations involving fire extinguishers being set off by students in Marian on February 27 and February 28.

Interestingly, there was a report from library personnel that a video on social media showed a bear in Lower Fulton on February 23. Security responded to this report and there was no bear to be found.

A fake identification was found on February 25. Then, on February 27, a student was caught helping themselves to food orders in the lobby of Leo Hall - the perpetrator was sent to Conduct.

On February 26, an exit sign was damaged in Midrise while a light was broken in McCormick the same night. The following day, in McCormick, a student damaged property by carving into a door. On February 28, an instance of arson was reported in Champagnat, which involved a student burning fliers in the restroom.

The Office of Safety and Security is creating a number of Fire Safety videos in response to the increase of campus fires reported in the last issue. Iris Hau, Administrative Coordinator from the Safety & Security Office, is producing these videos, many of which feature Frankie the Fox showing students the dos and don'ts of fire safety.

With spring break almost here, students are reminded of the importance of securing their residences, and as always, they are encouraged to avoid leaving valuable items like jewelry, cash and electronics behind over break. Any suspicious activity should be reported immediately to Marist Security at 845-471-1822.
