With September coming to a close, fall elections for the Marist College Student Government Association are right around the corner. Both freshman elections and representative elections will be held in the next month.

The elections for the Class of 2026 are for a total of five roles – President, Vice President, Secretary, Historian and Treasurer. Each elected official acts as a voice for their class. “[Those elected are] the middle people for the government, the administration and the student body,” said Carly Malfatto ’24, Director of Elections. Similarly, the representative elections are for any and all students, and they represent individuals based on their geographical location on or off campus. The representatives help create a “...close-knit group of people who have something in common.” Examples of representatives include those for transfers, commuters, North End and more. They are individuals that are there for students if they wish to express their problems and concerns.

Within the past few weeks, the SGA has held information sessions, where all freshman and representative candidates were introduced and announced their positions.

Last week candidates had to petition, which has them gather signatures for their campaign. After petitioning, candidates will come to Malfatto with their signatures and flyers for approval going into the next week.

In the near future, the candidates will then directly talk to the student body during Speech Night, where they will discuss their objectives for the upcoming year.

After that, voting will be held, and each and every student will have the opportunity to share their voice for whom they wish to represent them. Voting for freshman and representative fall elections will be held online from Oct. 17-19, and results will be announced on Wednesday, Oct. 19.
