Alternatives to the Typical Marist Weekend

By Yanisa Campusano

Everyone is familiar with the social life at Marist. Typically, Thursday, Friday and Saturday means that students can be found heading out to their favorite bars for a night out. However, there are plenty of people who do not go out as frequently and prefer to stay in for various reasons. As a freshman, it can be especially hard to find things to do since it seems that everyone goes out to the bars.

Some of the more popular things to do during weekend nights on campus consist of Netflix, hanging out with friends, going to the movies or seeing a comedy show. However, if you don’t want to do these things, then fear no more, because this article will make sure you have a busy and productive weekend.

Sleep and Netflix are two things that go hand in hand as a college student; if you’re not doing one, then you’re doing the other. On a weekend, instead of being a hermit and watching Netflix on your own, getting a group of friends together is a great way to spend the night. This could go from having a movie night, starting a new series or even rewatching a Netflix favorite. With friends, playing Cards Against Humanity, baking treats, or trying out some face masks are great ways to keep the night going.

Another thing to do on a weekend is to go out to eat with friends. The area surrounding Marist has some decent places to eat, such as Applebees, the Palace Dinner, Campus Deli, Rossi’s, Giacomo's and even McDonalds.

As boring as it may sound, catching up on school work is another way to make use of the weekend. This is a good opportunity to make use of the library, especially since most people will be out. The quiet time could be used to apply for internships, scholarships, or even respond to some emails that have been piling up in your inbox. The deserted campus would even be the perfect time to do laundry, especially for freshman living in the dorms.

Students also do not have to restrict themselves to being on campus. As a college student, having some money to spend is always a good thing. For this reason, working the graveyard shift at a job off campus not only could kill time, but it will also keep any night owls busy.

Going to a  Broadway show off campus would also be a great way to spend a weekend. Marist has had trips to see Kinky Boots, The Book of Mormon, Dear Evan Hansen and Waitress. Going for a drive, which could lead to a road trip, is a great way to make some memories in a short amount of time. While on that road trip, you and your friends can visit friends at another college. Not only does this allow for a different experience socially, but it also creates memories.

There are plenty of things to do at Marist that do not involve having to go out to the bars; having friends with common interests and a plan are ways to keep busy on the weekends.
