THE Podcast Every Rap Lover Has Been Missing

In our culture, we have become numb to the idea of deeper meanings when it comes to music. We put on our headphones, press shuffle, and listen to whatever is playing without taking a more in-depth look into what it all means. For many artists nowadays, it isn’t hard to figure out what they’re  saying in their music. Mainly it is about love, getting money, or heartbreak. However, some artists are inconsistent with what society has forced us to be.

As we know, artists have a way with words. They take whatever they are thinking or feeling and use their creativity to create immaculate art pieces that smooth our ears with a sense of tranquility. Some artists are better than others when trying to tell a story with their words. Lyrically, artists like Kendrick Lamar or Kanye West heavily rely on simple metaphors and 44symbols to explain their profound meaning. On the other hand, individual artists try to mainly focus on the musical production of a piece to get their point across. Artists like Tyler, the Creator or Frank Ocean takes great pride in producing sounds and melodies that allow the listeners to feel immersed in the world that they are trying to paint.

So, what does all of this mean? What is the deeper meaning that these artists are trying to portray in their albums and songs?

I know for many of us, this question is not something new. Their music sparks our curiosity and forces us to want to learn more about their music and why we love it so much. This is precisely what the Dissect Podcast does.

The Dissect Podcast is a serialized music podcast. The podcast does what you do not have time to do and sheer will power do and breaks down song by song, lyric by lyric, measure by measure, of your favorite artist’s albums. It dissects not only the lyrics of the song but, it analyzes the musical production of the song and why it is so essential to the album itself. Not only does it analyze every song, but it goes deep into the background of the artist to give context to what the artist is trying to portray in their albums.

The podcast stems from the curiosity of its host and creator, Cole Cuchna. Cuchna, an avid music lover, decided to start the podcast back in 2016. While still working at his job, decided to produce a podcast that allowed him and music lovers around the world to have their questions finally answered about their favorite artist's album. Since then, Cuchna has been able to quit his job and be able to focus on the podcast itself solely. This has allowed for the podcast to grow and mature into what it is today.

The podcast has five seasons, with the fifth season just finishing. Each season focuses on a different album. To go down the line, season one starts with Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly. Cuchna dives deep into Kendrick's past and references his other album good kid, m.A.A.d city, to give reference to what he is trying to portray. Season two goes back in time, dissecting Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, which is considered to be one of the best albums of all time.

The podcast takes an in-depth secularized analysis of the album itself to explain what it all means. Season three is a double hitter season in which the podcast dives into both Channel Orange and Blonde by Frank Ocean. This season starts with Channel Orange and even references his mixtape Nostalgia Ultra to explain the context of Blonde and what it all means since Frank Ocean hasn’t said much about either.

Before jumping into the next season, the podcast released a sub-season on The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Cuchna felt as if this album was too precise and too beautiful not to be dissected and analyzed, which he was entirely right.

Later on season four, the podcast decides to jump to one of Frank’s close friends, Tyler, the Creator and dissects his album Flower Boy. The podcast dives into what makes this album so unique and vital in today's society and how it has much more meaning, then many may think. Season five has ended with the dissection of DAMN. By Kendrick Lamar. The podcast dives into what so many of us have wondered about Kendrick’s biblical references and the overall meaning of it all, mainly answering the question on if it should be played backward.

So, if you are looking to learn more about your favorite artists and albums or are just interested in understanding why people think these albums are so important, I highly suggest you give this podcast a listen. Through the unique serialized analysis of Cole Cuchna to the unique curiosity of the listeners, this is the podcast that every music lover has been looking for.
