“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” Trailer Leaves Fans With More Questions Than Answers

With the trailer for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” amassing a record-breaking 718 million views in 24 hours, fans online are clamoring to know what's in store for the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

Picking up right where the previous movie left off, the trailer begins with Peter Parker (Tom Holland) looking rather distressed while hanging from a building. The viewers then see that he is watching a video of his ex-girlfriend, MJ (Zendaya), with his former best friend, Ned (Jacob Batalon).

Because of the spell cast to erase everyone’s memories of Peter at the end of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” both MJ and Ned have no recollection of Peter, leaving him isolated and alone.

Continuing with the theme of isolation, viewers then see a montage of Peter watching his closest friends move on happily without him while Peter reads a letter that appears to be meant for both of them.

After a few action scenes and even a cameo from Jon Bernthal's Punisher, we see signs of change in Peter physically as opposed to the mental conflict that the trailer centers around.

After passing out, Peter wakes up in a web cocoon. As he is about to fall, he catches himself by shooting a web out of his wrist, surprisingly, without the suit on.

Reminiscent of early 2000’s nostalgia from Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man, the cause for this sudden change has sent theorists into a frenzy.

Seeking help from Dr. Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) to solve what is referred to as a “DNA mutation,” we see Spider-Man's powers becoming out of control as he is seemingly hypersensitive to even a drop of water.

While the emotional and physical turmoil of Peter Parker would keep any superhero fan happy, Marvel fans are granted one more treat: getting a first look at  “Stranger Things” star Sadie Sink’s mysterious character for the first time.

Sink has shared little information about her role in the film, the trailer shows us that her character is causing chaos and being pursued by Damage Control.

A conversation between Spider-Man and what appears to be a law enforcement leader seems to show that this mysterious character can control minds.

The leading theory is that Sink is playing Jean Grey, a founding member of the X-Men who has both telekinetic and telepathic powers.

Despite the majority of the evidence pointing towards Jean Grey, some fans still have their doubts. Other potential characters include Gwen Stacey, an alternative love interest, or Screwball, a supervillain.

“No way they introduce Jean Grey in a street-level Spider-Man movie,” said Bryce Bothwell ‘27. “Screwball's thing is to live stream her crimes and mischief, and it looks like she is doing that in the trailer in front of the computers.”

The trailer finishes strong, showing several action shots, comic book cover recreations, and even a brief clip of Peter and MJ finally standing face to face.

With the movie releasing on July 31, fans will be lining up outside of theaters to watch Peter Parker take on what could be his most difficult challenge yet.
