The Marist College a cappella groups’ spring concert is set to premier on Saturday May 22nd, with the theme “Begin Again.” The concert will feature three music groups -- the Enharmonics, Time Check and the Sirens.

After a year of Covid-19 restricting the singers from rehearsing and making music together, this concert brings a fresh start for the groups and their music. It also marks the first time that all three groups will be performing together for the spring concert.

According to Ethan Maslyn ‘22, a member of Time Check, the groups weren’t permitted to practice together in-person for the majority of the spring semester. “Practicing as a group is so much more fulfilling,” Maslyn said, explaining how difficult it’s been to only rehearse over Zoom for so long.

Despite this struggle of being kept apart, the a cappella groups found ways to overcome the distance between them. Through hosting weekly Zoom rehearsals, filming lip syncing videos and recording audio of their individual singing, the groups created a whole new way to present their music.

With the help of alumni Tom Vestuto ‘20, they edited together a series of videos to create the final piece for their spring showcase. “It’s been an interesting process, but I’m glad we have something to show for it,” Maslyn said.

Though the ups and downs of the process became the inspiration for the concert's theme “Begin Again.” “It’s a fresh outlook on all of this,” Sirens member Rebecca Butcher ‘23 said about the theme. “We found a way to make the best out of a bad situation.”

Maslyn shared her interpretation of the inspiration behind the concert. “We want to show people that even though we’ve been restricted we’re still working hard and loving what we do,” he said. “We really wanted to capture that feeling of going out into the world after all that’s happened the last year and a half. We want to inspire people to get back out there.”

The spring a cappella concert will premier live on the Marist Music Youtube channel this Saturday, May 22 at 8pm.
