Marist University is bubbling with excitement over the various magazine launches from student-led publications across campus. At the end of the spring semester, many publications debut work that students have been working on all semester.

On May 2, the spring 2025 issue of Mosaic, Marist’s literary and arts magazine, was officially launched in conjunction with the English department’s Fontaine Fest, which takes place every spring. The launch party featured food, posters and of course, copies of the newest Mosaic.

“It’s hard to describe the feeling I get when I see people look through the newest edition at the launch party,” said Abby Castonguay ‘25, the current Editor-in-Chief of Mosaic. “I’m so proud of the editorial board’s work this year, and it is truly so rewarding to watch people’s faces light up as they flip through the magazine for the first time.”

The magazine features student-submitted poetry, short stories, photography and other creative works that are submitted at the beginning of the semester. After submissions, the section editors share their selections while the design team goes over the photography and art submissions to decide on a cover photo. The whole process of planning, editing and designing takes around two months.

For Castonguay, this issue of the Mosaic means a lot, as it is her last one at Marist. She became the Editor-in-Chief in the fall semester of 2024, after beginning her involvement in the fall of 2023. As Editor-in-Chief, she oversees all aspects and sections of the magazine, including design, content, event planning and more.

“The Spring 2025 edition—my final edition—is particularly special to me. I spent hours going back and forth with the design editors to ensure there was correct spelling, perfect spacing and proper formatting,” said Castonguay. “On top of everything inside, the cover is stunning, and I could not be prouder of what we were able to accomplish. The talent of Marist students will never cease to amaze me; it was an honor to serve in this role and help bring their work into a tangible form.”

Across campus on the fashion department side, Measure Magazine launched its spring publication on May 9. Measure is not only a student-led publication, but one of Marist’s experiential learning initiatives. Each semester, there is a class focusing on the production of the magazine, which features collaboration from students and professors. For this issue, 26 stories span the 116 pages of the magazine.

“This is the largest magazine Measure has ever produced. We wanted more stories and a more carefully curated collection of visuals,” said Olyvia Young ‘25, the Editor-in-Chief of Measure Magazine.

Young, who became Editor-in-Chief in the fall of 2024, had big goals for this year’s issues. She decided to try several new things this year. Instead of focusing on a general theme like previous issues, this year they focused on showcasing their mission statement: “How Do We Measure Up?”

“I began to notice that who and what Measure truly was, was being lost because the theme was always changing, so no one really knew who this theme was meant for and what it was intended to do,” said Young. “This has been the best decision we have ever made. It has allowed us to connect with so many different kinds of people and share new stories and start challenging conversations.”

The entire process of creating the magazine takes about three and a half months, but most of the production work takes a span of three to four weeks. For Young, the process can get quite emotional and overwhelming, but to her, the end product is worth it.

“I am just so proud of this group of women I have met and gotten to work with,” she said. “I’m so emotional!”

This year, Measure had its own promotional video screening and cover launch event in Lowell Thomas. After the promotional video was shared in the screening room, the highly anticipated cover was revealed to a crowd of excited Measure fans. This year’s cover star is Tiffany Sung ‘25. In addition, Measure promoted their upcoming magazine at the annual Fashion Fest on the campus green and at the “Dream Magazine” event, which was a partnership with MPorium.

Copies of Measure Magazine were also available for purchase at the annual Silver Needle Runway event, another major fashion event that draws in hundreds of spectators. Proceeds from purchases of Measure are donated to the Marist Fashion Scholarship Fund. If you’re looking for a copy of Mosaic, look no further than the academic buildings all around campus, in addition to the Murray Student Center.
