Former Marist Student Formally Charged for Unlawful Surveillance in Dyson Building Restrooms
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department and the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office are investigating an “unlawful surveillance” incident that took place in three gender neutral bathrooms in the Marist University Dyson Building at the end of the spring semester.
“A Marist student is suspected of placing a video recording device in the restrooms on the second, third, and fourth floors of the building at various times between the last week of April and early May. The student has been formally charged by law enforcement, suspended from the University, and is not allowed on campus,” said Director of Campus Safety Daniel Gough in an email sent to students on Tuesday morning.
Upon learning of the investigation, Marist security inspected each restroom on campus and confirmed that there were no other recording devices in any other bathrooms on campus.
The investigation has currently not found any verification that the recordings were posted or shared anywhere. Marist is attempting to inform anyone who was affected by the incident.
Due to the ongoing investigation, the email provides a brief overview of what happened, confirming rumors students have heard on social media over the past week and acknowledging the unease that has ensued.
“Since this is an active investigation and in view of the privacy issues involved, we have been and continue to be limited in what information we can share,” Gough wrote in the email.
The Marist Circle will report any information from the investigation that becomes public.
