Coming down from a yearlong high after releasing her 12th studio album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” singer-songwriter Taylor Swift has more in store for her fans to keep them on their toes. Swift announced the deluxe version, “The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore,” on Sept. 23, adding four new songs.
Swift first announced a song from the set as a single titled “Patient Zero,” surprising Swifties with an announcement on Sept. 22. The unexpected announcement sent shockwaves through the fandom, sparking hundreds of theories across TikTok and X. Swifties began dissecting every frame of the “Patient Zero” cover art, hunting for hidden Easter eggs, a common feature of Swift’s music.
Swift then announced three other songs to complete the deluxe edition: “Cleveland!,” “Pink Clouding” and “Babylon.”
Swifties had high expectations for the new songs, given Swift’s history of award-winning songwriting. Reactions to the tracks have varied.
Swift has “no intention of turning in her Tortured Poets membership card any time soon,” Variety said.
Despite the happy, uplifting lyrics written by Swift in collaboration with producers Max Martin and Shellback, people online have had some things to say about the production.
Some fans view the deluxe tracks as a return to joyful pop, while others wish the production sounded more like Swift’s earlier music.
The track “Cleveland!” has drawn criticism despite being an homage to her husband, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
The song’s talk-singing is accompanied by “almost painfully cringeworthy lyricism,” The Post said.
Even though the song pushes back at Swift’s critics, it has drawn criticism since its release.
“Babylon” is “the most Swift-sounding track of the four, which lacks much to make it a standout,” The Post said.
Finally, “Pink Clouding” has the most upbeat rhythm, reminding fans of the cherished “Lover” and “1989” eras.
So why have the tracks divided fans? Swift has constantly reinvented her sound, shifting from country twang to pop, indie folk and showmanship, and her fan base has grown diverse in its expectations.
Whether these deluxe tracks become fan-favorite staples or remain a new chapter in her discography, one thing is certain: Taylor Swift knows how to keep the entire music world talking. As she navigates this new era of “The Life of a Showgirl,” the debate surrounding “The Encore” shows that her audience cares just as deeply about where her music has been as it does about where she is going next.
