Poughkeepsie has recently been named one of the top 100 cities in the U.S., ranking 82nd on the 2025 list by Resonance Consultancy. This recognition highlights the overall walkability of the city, which is rated 28th nationally, a thriving downtown district and stunning waterfront views.
As a student at Marist University, you’re living in one of America’s hidden gems. Countless off-campus adventures are all within reach of one of the most livable and explorable small cities. Here are some of the best off-campus spots that make Poughkeepsie so special.
Walkway Over the Hudson
One of the most iconic experiences in Poughkeepsie, the Walkway Over the Hudson, is a must-do during your time at Marist. Spanning 1.28 miles, the bridge is located just off campus and is recognized as the longest elevated pedestrian bridge in the world.
Whether you are an avid runner or just enjoy nice scenery, this is the perfect spot. You can do everything from sunrise runs to sunset strolls with friends. Get out your sneakers and grab your roommate!
“I loved it so much, it was such a lovely view. It was great seeing so many people out and about,” said Caleigh Minnich ‘27. “Going in the fall really added to the beauty.”
Kelly’s Bakery
If you’re searching for a new favorite breakfast spot, Kelly’s Bakery is a Marist staple. A quick walk or drive from campus, Kelly’s is famous for its delicious pastries and specialty coffees. Everything is freshly baked and made from local ingredients.
The line might be out the door, and pastries will fly off the shelves, but rest assured, it is totally worth it.
“I love Kelly’s because of its proximity to campus and the quality of their coffee and food,” said Nora Ritchie ‘28. “It’s pretty inexpensive in comparison to other local coffee shops, and the people working are always so welcoming and friendly.”
Locust Grove Estate
If you need a peaceful escape from campus with stunning views, check out the Locust Grove Estate. Once home to Samuel Morse, inventor of the telegraph, this historic estate features over 200 acres of gardens, forests and trails. For history lovers, there is a rotating art exhibit and estate tours offered at the estate.
Cosimo’s Trattoria
Craving Italian food? Check out Cosimo’s, which is located just a few minutes from campus. This restaurant is known for its brick oven pizzas, fresh pasta and delicious cocktails. It gives the perfect “Sunday dinner vibe” at your home away from home. Make sure to bring your family here when they come to visit, you will not be disappointed.
Bardavon 1869 Opera House
This historic theater has been entertaining Poughkeepsie for over 150 years. Notable actors and musicians who have performed at Bardavon include Bob Dylan, Cher, Houdini and Frank Sinatra, among many others. Today, it’s still a hotspot for concerts, movies and live performances.
Poughkeepsie Galleria
If you’re looking for a one-stop location that has everything you need, look no further than the Poughkeepsie Galleria. There are stores ranging from entertainment to popular retail chains to local favorites.
If you want to see a show on the silver screen, check out Student Activities for $5 movie tickets. Don’t have a car on campus? No problem! Marist also makes the Galleria accessible for students by offering weekend shuttle services to and from the mall.
Vassar College Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center
Poughkeepsie is home to multiple colleges, giving it a strong “college-town spirit” according to Resonance Consultancy. At Vassar College, right down the road, students can visit the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center. This building houses over 200,000 collections ranging from ancient to contemporary. Bonus: it’s free for students!
